Women's Tennis Sweep Simpson, Edge Coe to Open Fall Season

Picking up right where they left off in last season, the William Jewell Cardinal women's tennis team won both matches on the opening day of the fall 2012 season.  Jewell beat Simpson 9-0 before defeating Coe College 5-4 in the afternoon match.
 
In the opener against Simpson, sophomores Kristen Stivers and Katy Lehenbauer defeated Tiffany Bost and Allison Anderson 8-4 at number one doubles.  At number one singles, Stivers beat Bost 6-1, 6-1.  Lehenbauer  was also a winner at number three singles, beating Lindsay Nash 6-1, 6-2.
 
At number two doubles, the sophomore duo of Conner and Loree Hazelrigg beat Nash and her partner Kelli Ehrhardt 8-1.  Loree then beat Michelle Hartman at number six singles 6-3, 6-2. 
 
The final doubles win came from seniors Hana Lindbloom and Jaimie Baker at number three, as they beat Lauren Schemmel  and Rami Vokt 8-2.  Lindbloom then won at number two singles 6-0, 6-3 and Baker won her match at number five singles 6-4, 6-0.  First-year player Savannah Drew won her debut match at number four singles 6-1, 6-1. 

The Cardinals second match of the day was a thriller that came down to the wire besting Coe College 5-4.  The Cardinals came out of doubles play up 2-1 with wins by Conner and Loree Hazelrigg and Hana Lindbloom and Jaimie Baker by scores of 8-2 and 8-6 respectively.  

Coe tied the match at 2-2 as Tai Lucero bested Lindbloom at number two singles 6-0, 6-1.  Drew and Baker drew the Cardinals to within one match of a team victory winning their matches at number four and number five singles 6-3, 6-0 and 7-5, 6-1. 

Loree Hazelrigg lost a tough three set match 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 but the Cardinals still led 4-3.  Sophomore Kristen Stivers saved two matches in the third set tie break to come back and win 6-3, 1-6, 12-10 that clinched the dual for the Cardinals.  Lehenbauer lost another tough third set tiebreak at number three singles to give Coe thier fourth point of the dual.

The Cardinals return to action next Friday and Saturday, as they travel to Quincy, Ill., to participate in the Quincy University Invitational tournament.
