The 1956-1957 men's basketball team, coached by Jim Nelson, won the first outright Missouri College Athletic Union Championship for the Cardinals in 32 years and Jewell’s first ever NAIA District 16 title. They were Jewell’s first basketball team to play in the NAIA National Tournament where they reached the Sweet Sixteen, while setting what was at the time a school record with 23 wins.
