Coached by Darrel Gourley, the 1976 Cross Country team won the conference meet by scoring a perfect 15 points. The first five finishers in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Meet were Cardinals, Tim Schmid, Steve Harrison, Ken Tounzen, Bob McPhee and Matt Ausmus. Schmid eclipsed the Jewell course record with a time of 24:58 over the five-mile course. Team captains were Bob McPhee and George Poland, the only senior on the squad who finished 35th in the NAIA National Championship.
