The 1980 Cardinals, coached by alumnus Stan McGarvey, went 11-1-1 overall and were the Heart of America Conference co-champions and reached the NAIA Division II national semifinals. The team's only loss came in the national playoff to Wilmington (OH). Nicknamed the 'Cardiac Cards', they were ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation.
This team boasted four All-Americans and 13 All-Conference performers. Second Team All-American David Cunningham set a school record with 1,500 rushing yards while head coach Stan McGarvey was named the NAIA Division II National Coach of the Year.
