Vic Wallace took over the Jewell football program in 1981 and led the Cardinals to an 11-1 overall record, going undefeated during the regular season on their way to winning the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Jewell reached the NAIA Division II national semifinal for the second consecutive season, where they suffered their only loss of the season. This Cardinal team scored 353 points for an average of 29.4 per game, compared to just 10.5 by their opponents and were ranked as high as No. 2 nationally.
Two players were named All-America during this season while 18 received All-HAAC recognition.
