This Cardinal squad, coached by Vic Wallace, advanced further in the post season than any other football team in program history, finishing as the national runners-up. The Cardinals were also champions of the Heart of America Athletic Conference (7-1) and finished 10-2 overall.
They reached the NAIA Division II National Championship game with postseason wins over Sul Ross State (TX) (in triple overtime) and No. 1 ranked Northwestern, IA before losing at Linfield (Ore.) in the national title game.
They opened the season as the No. 2 ranked team in the nation and were ranked No. 1 for four weeks consecutive weeks during the season. Eight players were named to the NAIA-II All-America squad and six to the Academic All-American team.
