MacKinney attended Jewell from 1915-19 and lettered in both track and baseball. He was selected All-Conference in baseball. He set a national record by striking out 25 of 27 batters vs. Tarkio in 1917. He also struck out 23 batters while pitching a no-hitter vs. Maryville Teachers College (now Northwest Missouri State University) in the same year. MacKinney was conference champion in the long jump.
