Gary Patton was a two-sport standout for the Cardinals, starring in both football and baseball, after transferring from Northwest Missouri State. As a catcher on the diamond, he was a three-time All-Heart of America Conference selection and earned All-District and All-Region honors once. He served as a co-captain and was behind the dish to catch Jimmy Ray Haynes' no-hitter versus Iowa State. During his career, the Cardinal baseball program won 85 games with two appearances in the NAIA National Tournament. He was also a quarterback on the football team, earning All-Conference and All-District honors twice. As a senior in 1977 he was the recipient of the Cecil Martin Award for Men's Athlete of the Year.
