Martin lettered in football, basketball, and track. He also received All-Missouri honors in football and basketball. He was selected as Jewell’s Best All-Around Athlete in 1910. Martin was Captain of the Football team in 1911. Additionally he set a state record of 16.0 in the 120 yard-high hurdles. He played professional football with the original Canton Bulldogs. He played right halfback and the famous Jim Thorpe played left halfback. He was inducted into the NAIA Football Hall of Fame in 1961.
