John Hickman attend Jewell from 1957-61 and coached for the school from 1968-79. He was a four year letter winner in basketball, starting every game he played in. He scored 1540 points and is considered by many to be the best to ever play at Jewell. He was the Cardinals first ever NAIA-All American (3rd team in 1961). He was named Jewell’s Athlete of the Year in 1961. He acted as men’s basketball coach for 11 years with three of his squads winning conference titles and the 1975 squad winning the NAIA District 16 Title and reaching the first round of the NAIA National Tournament. Hickman was named HAAC Coach of the Year three times. He also coached cross country and tennis and was the assistant coach for football.
