Patterson was a four year letter winner in both football and baseball. He led the Cardinals in rushing, passing, and punting as a senior. He set the school record for total offense. He averaged over 48 yards per punt as a senior. He was named an NAIA honorable Mention All-American in football. Patterson was also named Jewell’s Athlete of the Year in1966. He was drafted by the New York Yankee’s and played in the minor leagues for two years.
