Larry Heaps earned eight combined varsity letters between cross country and track and field. The captain of the 1961 cross country team that won the Missouri Collegiate Athletic Union championship and took a program-best fifth place at the NAIA National Championship, he graduated as the school record holder in the mile with a time of 4:26.20. Individually as a senior, he won the MCAU title and placed 14th at the NAIA National Championship, earning him All-America honors.
