While a star in football, basketball, and baseball from 1908-12, R.E. Bowles is known as the 'Father of William Jewell College Athletics', and best admired for his work as a coach and athletic director from 1912-1947.
He became Jewell’s first full-time coach and athletic director following his graduation in 1912. During his tenure he coached football, basketball, baseball, track, tennis, and golf, winning 50 conference championships.
Bowles was elected to the NAIA Football Hall of Fame in 1959, and all five of his children graduated from William Jewell.
