Sam Maddox attended Jewell from 1963-67 and lettered all four years in golf. He also lettered in football. He was considered by many to be the best golfer in the history of the college. The Cardinals were conference champs in golf three times. The 1964 squad also won the district title and participated in the NAIA National Championship. Maddox was a conference medalist in 1965, 1966, and 1967. Also, his 36-hole score of 141 set an MCAU record in 1965. His average score for 36 holes during his career was 147.
