Tennis Teams Compete in Weekend Tournaments

The William Jewell College women's tennis team earned singles victories in 5 of the 8 singles flights and two of the four doubles flights over the weekend at the Quincy University Fall Classic in Quincy, Ill.
 
Sophomore Kristen Stivers dominated her first two singles matches dropping only one game in two matches in the No. 1 singles flight.  Stivers lost a tough three set battle in the final to Upper Iowa's Amanda Nunez 6-4, 3-6, 0-1 (4-10).

Hana Lindbloom won in the No. 2 singles bracket, winning her opening round match against Upper Iowa Karli Loewecke 6-3, 6-3, before taking down Katie Hatch of North Central Community College 6-3, 6-1. The senior would eventually triumph over Quincy University's Michelle Gass in the finals, 6-1, 0-6 and 1-0 (11-9).

Sophomore Katy Lehenbauer finished second in the No. 3 singles bracket.  Lehenbauer advanced to the finals only dropping three games in two matches.  In the final,  Lehenbauer fell to Upper Iowa's Angie Alba 7-5, 6-4. 

First-year player Savannah Drew was victorious in the No. 4 singles bracket.  Drew dominated her first singles match 6-0, 6-0 then won a three set over Quincy University 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-1) to advance to the final.  Drew then defeated Mikinzee Salo from Upper Iowa  6-3, 6-1 in the final. 

Senior Jaimie Baker dominated in her first two singles rounds with wins over St. Ambrose and Upper Iowa to reach the final at No. 5.  In the final, Baker took on Ashley Longshore from Quincy University and found herself victorious 6-0, 7-5. 

Sophomore Loree Hazelrigg got by her first round opponent from North Central, then rolled into the final with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Quincy to put herself in the No. 6 singles final.  In the final Hazelrigg won a three set encounter over Upper Iowa's Nicole Pothen 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3).

Sophomore Conner Hazelrigg dominated the No. 7 dropping 5 games in three matches.  Hazelrigg won her final over Emily Turner from St. Ambrose. 

In doubles, Stivers and Lehenbauer fell in the  No. 1 semi-final to Upper Iowa.  Conner and Loree Hazelrigg earned the championship at the No. 2 position with wins over Westminster, Upper Iowa and Quincy.  Lindbloom and Baker won the No. 3 doubles position in dominating fashion. The senior tandem dropped only two games in route to their doubles title.

The women's team will travel to Lamoni, Iowa to take on Graceland University on Friday, September 14 at 3:00 p.m.
 
The men's tennis team competed at the Missouri Valley College Invitational this past weekend in Marshall, Mo. 

Shane Giannetti and Bryan Thomas fell in the quarterfinals of the A bracket while Senior Bronson Brassel and Max Cooper fell in the semi-finals of the C bracket.  Sophomore Will Gross advanced to the Semi-finals in the D bracket. 

The Cardinals dominated doubles action.  In the A flight doubles Giannetti and Thomas advanced to the finals with wins over Great Lakes Valley opponent Maryville University and Missouri Valley College.  Senior Bronson Brassel and junior Max Cooper also advanced to the final of the A bracket with wins over Baker University and Missouri Valley College.  The finals was not played due to time constraints since both finalist were from Jewell. 

In the B flight, Junior Michael Wiskirchen returned to action after two years off due to injury and along with partner sophomore Jimmy Hunter advanced to the final with wins over Baker University and Graceland University.  Hunter and Wiskirchen survived a tight 9-8 win over Graceland.   Sophomore Chris Reimer and first-year player Michael Rawat advanced to the final with wins over Missouri Valley College and Ashford University.  Again, due to time constraints the final was not played since both finalists were from William Jewell. 

The men's team will also head to Lamoni, Iowa on Friday to take on Graceland with a 3:00 p.m. start time.
