William Jewell softball took a doubleheader sweep from non-conference foe Newman in softball action Tuesday in Liberty. The Cardinals (20-17), though, had a difficult time witih Newman (3-25) in a tight first game before winning the second game in five innings.
After giving up a four-run third inning in game one, the Cardinals had a lot of work to do in a short amount of time. They scratched back with two runs in the fifth inning on a
Rachel Hayden double, a single run in the sixth inning on Taylor Brown's solo home run, and tied the game in the seventh on Emily Cline's sacrifice fly.
The winning run, though, came in the ninth inning when the Cardinals manufactured a run.
Eileen Greenwood started the bottom of the ninth at second base in the international tie-breaker system. When
Faith Song grounded a ball to the pitcher, Greenwood advanced to third base on the throw to first and the subsequent throw back to third base, sliding in just ahead of the tag. Two pitches later, on a passed ball that bounced just a few feet from the cather, Greenwood again slid to beat the tag, scoring the winning run.
Maria Buckingham went all nine innings for Jewell, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out nine to raise her record to 12-8.
Things came much easier to the Cardinals in the second game, when they scored two runs in the first inning, four runs in the second inning and four more in the third inning. Starting pitcher
Amanda Storm allowed just one hit--a swinging bunt out in front of the plate by the first batter of the game--and only faced 17 hitters in the game, shutting out Newman for her fifth win against four losses.
Faith Song had a three-run home run, while Hayden and Cone each had RBI singles in the five-inning game..
Jewell travels to St. Louis this weekend to return to GLVC play against Maryville and UMSL. The Cardinals are currently third in the GLVC Western Division.
