The William Jewell College softball Cardinals split a GLVC pair at home against Quincy University with a 4-3 victory in the opener and 3-2 loss in the second game on Saturday.
It was a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth that scored
Emily Cline to give Jewell the 4-3 victory over the Lady Hawks in the opener.
The Cardinals scored their first three runs of the game in the bottom of the third highlighted by a solo home run by
Erica Scowley. Quincy scored single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings respectively to tie things up at 3.
Rachel Hayden,
Lexy Rozmus and Scowely each finished with a hit and RBI.
Maria Buckingham (12-8) had another outstanding outing allowing seven hits and three runs with six strikeouts and a walk in the win.
In the second game,
Amanda Storm scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage. Quincy then scored two in the third and one in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Cardinals made things interesting as Hayden singled home
Faith Song to cut the lead to one. Jewell then had runners on first and second with one out but Quincy was able to close the door on the rally and take game two 3-2.
Hayden had two and an RBI while
Ashlee Nation and Rozmus also collected two hits for Jewell.
Amanda Storm (4-5) took the loss as she tossed seven innings giving up seven hits, and three runs while striking out five and walking three.
The Cardinals 18-17 and 14-11 in GLVC, will play host to Newman University on Tuesday, April 11 at 2:00 p.m. on the Jewell campus in Liberty, Mo.
