William Jewell College dropped a nine-inning game to Quincy University on Sunday 3-1 to wrap up the weekend series against the Hawks. Rain forced the game to start three hours late, and shortened a scheduled doubleheader to a singe game at Fred Flook Field.
After giving up a total of 19 runs and 31 hits in the first two games, Cardinal pitchers
David Collins (6 1/3 innings, three runs on seven hits) and
Cody Downing (2 2/3 innings, no runs on one hit) were effective at limiting Quincy's attack.
A controversial call in the fifth inning, with the Hawks leading 1-0, seemed to change the course of the game. Collins timed a two-out pick-off throw with second baseman
Bryan Rezin perfectly, but the safe call at second base allowed the inning to extend. A double then scored the second Hawks run, and a single added the third and final run of the game.
Jewell (19-27, 10-21 TGLVC) got an RBI single from Clark O'Dowd in the sixth inning, but could come no closer.
Four Quincy (28-19, 19-12) pitchers held the Cardinals to just four hits, with O'Dowd's single being the only Cardinal hit after the second inning.
Collins took the loss for Jewell, and is 5-6 on the year.
Jewell will play their final game of the season on Wednesday, a single nine-inning game with Southwest Baptist University starting at 3:30 p.m. in Liberty.
