Jewell Softball Wins Dramatically, Moves Ahead in GLVC Championships

Box Score
William Jewell softball held on to upset #22 ranked and #3 seed Truman Stat 8-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament in East Peoria, Illinois on Saturday.

The Cardinals, the #5 seed, advance to the 3:00 p.m. game in the elimination round of the tournament against top-seed Indianapolis, the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Jewell was down 3-1 in the fourth when Ashley Barrett came up with the first of several key plays, hitting a three-run homerun to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead, a lead that lasted until the seventh inning when the Cardinals touched GLVC co-pitcher of the year Kindra Henze for four insurance runs on a three-run homer by Kelsey Morgan and a solo homerun by Brittany Madsen.

The fun, though, was just beginning.

Rachel Hayden, who picked up the complete game win to run her pitching record in the circle to 15-8, came out to start the bottom of the seventh inning.  She was greeted by a single, a home run, another home run, and another single before balking and hitting a batter to load the bases with two outs.  She faced Whitney Richardson of the Bulldogs with the bases loaded and two outs.

After a strike and a foul ball, Richardson lashed a hit to leftfield, which scored another run, but Cardinal outfielder Rachel Potvin launched a perfect strike to the plate to cut down the tying run, with Aerin Creamer applying the tag to end the game.

The game featured six homeruns.  The Cardinals made two errors in the game and turned the game's only double play.

Hayden went seven innings, allowing seven runs on 13 hits, walking two, hitting one, and striking out one.  Jewell had a dozen hits, highlighted by three homeruns and an RBI double by Faith Song.

The matchup with Indianapolis comes after the season series in the last two years, Jewell's first years in the GLVC, have been rained out.  Free live audio coverage on the WJC Sports Network begins at approximately 2:45 CDT with Rick Cole.
