Box Score The William Jewell baseball team withstood a late rally attempt by Bellarmine to hang on for a 6-4 win on day two of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The win moves the Cardinals to 32-20 overall and keeps them in the championship bracket of the double elimination tournament.
It was Bellarmine who struck first with a run in the bottom of the second as Drew Greenwood singled to score Nick Wright to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead. Jewell wasted no time turning the momentum back in their favor, scoring two runs in the top of the third.
Coleman Waheed roped a two out single and advanced on a wild pitch followed by a walk to
Drew Standifer to put two on. Back-to-back RBI singles from
Garrett McKinzie and
Andrew Miller put Jewell on top 2-1.
The Knights responded in the bottom half of the frame with a run off an RBI single by Griffin Neuer to tie the game at two.
In the top of the fourth
Dane Erbst walked and came around to score on a single off the bat of
Tanner Foerschler to help Jewell regain the lead at 3-2.
Mike Leeper extended that advantage to two runs as he layed down a squeeze bunt to score the speedy
Jesse Gray from third base.
McKinzie made it 5-2 in the fifth inning, scoring on an error on the Bellarmine pitcher after a failed pickoff attempt.
BU pulled within one as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. First baseman
Dylan Christie preserved the Cardinal lead as he kept a shot off the bat of Neuer on the infield allowing the Knights to score just one run on the play and leave the trail runner stranded at third base.
In the following frame, Waheed lifted what seemed to be a inning-ending fly ball to right center field, however the two Bellarmine outfielders seemed to lose the ball in the lights and the ball dropped for a double which scored Gray to extend the Jewell advantage to 6-4.
In the bottom of the eighth the Knights threatened as they put two runners on with back-to-back singles. Alex Ralph then singled through the right side on a ball that looked as though it would score a run but right fielder Erbst had other plans as he fired to McKinzie to gun the runner down at the plate and secure the 6-4 lead. Vijay Patel recorded a strikeout to the next batter to shut down the Knights.
Senior
Billy Kirkpatrick earned the win on the hill going six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on just seven hits, and a walk, while striking out four.
Patel earned the seven out save (3) for the Cardinals going two and one-third innings allowing just three hits and striking out four.
McKinzie and Waheed led the Jewell offense with three hits each while Gray scored two runs. The Cardinals outhit Bellarmine 11-10 while leaving seven runners on.
Jewell remains in the championship side of the bracket and moves on to play the winner of Missouri S&T and Indianapolis tomorrow evening at 5:00 p.m. The Miners and Greyhounds will matchup at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
