Box Score A late rally came up one run short for the William Jewell College baseball team, which dropped a 4-3 contest to University of Indianapolis in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament Saturday at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
The Hounds jumped on starter
Garret Smith (3-4) with a single run in the third and three in the fifth.   Smith did go eight strong giving up 8 hits while striking out 10 UINDY batters.Â
The Cardinals had trouble getting anything going against Hounds starter Colin Hawk who earned his first victory of the year going 8.2 innings giving up four hits, three runs (one earned) while striking out 11. Hawk helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, four RBI and one run scored.Â
Coleman Waheed hit a two-out two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to put Jewell on the board and cut UINDY's lead to 4-2.Â
Tyler Carpenter had a two-out RBI single in the ninth but was stranded at second base as
Drew Standifer grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.Â
Waheed finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI's and
Jesse Gray scored two runs on the day.Â
The loss pits the Cards (32-21) against Indianapolis again on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. (cdt). The winner of that game will advance to the championship game against Rockhurst University.Â
