The William Jewell baseball team dropped a 7-1 decision to Indianapolis on Sunday morning in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in Westfield, Ind. The loss drops Jewell to 32-22 overall and elimintates the Cardinals from the tournament.
The Greyhounds struck early with a run in the bottom of the first before junior
Dylan Christie tied the game at one with his team leading 16th home run of the season.Â
UIndy then broke the game open as they scored three runs in the third inning, a single run in the fourth and added two more in the fifth to take a commanding 7-1 lead.Â
The Cardinals plated a run in the top of the ninth as
Garrett McKinzie hit a solo home run to left field to pull Jewell within the final margin of 7-2.
The Cards were limited to just six hits led by two from
Jesse Gray.
Andrew Miller also reached base twice via the walk.Â
Senior
Austin Kretchmar took the loss going just three innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits.
Brendan Beatty tossed two and two-third innings allowing three earned runs while striking out six.
Zach Hutcherson also appeared on the hill in two and one-third innings of work.Â
Although they are not currently listed in the regional rankings the Cardinals have recently bested some of the top teams in the regional polls and will await the NCAA selection Sunday evening to learn if their postseason continues.Â
