The William Jewell women's basketball team saw their season come to a close with a 66-48 loss to Indianapolis, in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Cardinals, who entered as the No. 8 seed finishes with an overall record of 14-13 and 10-8 in the GLVC. Meanwhile No. 9 seed UIndy moves to 16-13 and advances to the quarterfinal round in Evansville, Ind. next week.
Things started slow for Jewell as they spotted the Greyhounds a 21-15 lead after the opening ten minutes. UIndy increased their lead to nine in the early portion fo the second period before the Cardinals closed the gap to four on a
Maddie Nelson three. They Greyhounds closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 37-24 lead into the half.
At the 9:43 mark of the fourth quarter, UIndy pushed their lead to 20, the largest of the day. Nelson hit a jumper with 5:26 to go to pull Jewell within 15 before the Greyhounds closed the game on 4-1 run to reach the final of 66-48.
Despite posting a season-low seven turnovers, Jewell struggled on the offensive end for much of the game, shooting just 26.4 percent from the floor and 23.1 percent from behind the arc. The Greyhounds shot an impressive 61.9 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from behind the arc, led by Martha Burse's 29 points.
Kayla Harrell led Jewell with 18 points to go along with four steals. In her final game in a Jewell uniform, Nelson posted 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while fellow senior
Chris Keys added three points and three boards.
William Jewell will lose Nelson and Chris to graduation this spring but will return eight players who appeared in at least 20 games, including four starters.
