Three Cardinals Earn All-GLVC Honors, Whelan Named First Team

Three members of the William Jewell men's basketball team have earned a selection to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference team, as announced by the league Tuesday. Senior Patrick Whelan was one of ten athletes listed on the first team while juniors Keith Hayes and Pharroh Gordon each earned second team honors. Gordon was also listed on the All-Defensive team.

Whelan, who will go down as one of the best players to ever wear the Cardinal uniform, earns his second career postseason honor after making the All-GLVC second team and All-Defensive team last season. In his final go around he averaged 18.2 points per game, which was fourth in the GLVC, to go along with 5.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. He leads the league with 2.9 three point field goals per game and was seventh with a 38.5 percent clip from behind the arc. The senior will also graduate ranked in the top 25 in career scoring average (12th), three point field goals made (fourth), three point field goals attempted (fourth), three point field goal percentage (11th), free throws made (25th), free throw percentage (17th), starts (eighth), minutes played and averaged (eighth), field goals made (18th), field goals attempted (14th).

Hayes and Gordon are both newcomers to the Cardinals this season but wasted no time making their presence known. Hayes led Jewell and was third in the GLVC with 18.7 points per game. The junior scored in double-figures in 25 of 26 games played, including posting 20 or more points on 11 occasions. His scoring average is on track to rank in the top 25 all-time at Jewell in a single season and is the fourth best of any Cardinal player in their first season with the program.

Despite being just 6'4 and a guard, Gordon erupted into a double-double machine posting 13 on the season which is third in the GLVC and 16th nationally. In total he pulled down 296 rebounds during the regular season which is 12th in division II, including 256 on the defensive end (9.1 per game) which is second in the nation and second all-time in a single season at Jewell, trailing only Kirk Chastain's 281 set back in the 1978-79 season. Gordon closed the regular season with a double-double in five of his final six games and pulled down 20, 13, 13, 17, and 13 rebounds during that stretch. His 20 rebound game versus Truman State was only four shy of a 62 year old record. On the season Gordon averaged 14.5 points and 10.6 rebounds, making him one of only three players to average a double-double in the GLVC, while also dishing out 2.8 assists, and leading the team with 50 steals.

Maryville University senior center Nolan Berry has been named the GLVC Player of the Year in men's basketball. Bellarmine University senior guard Jarek Coles took home GLVC Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Rockhurst University guard Curtis Lewis garnered the GLVC Freshman of the Year award.  Bellarmine mentor Scott Davenport was recognized by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.  In addition, 20 student-athletes were picked as All-Conference honorees, 10 representatives were named to the league's All-Defensive Team, five individuals were selected to the league's All-Freshman Team, Truman State University earned the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award, and 15 honorees were recognized as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award recipients.

Of the 20 All-Conference honorees, Truman State led the conference contingent with three first-team selections, including senior forward Zach Fischer, sophomore guard Brodric Thomas, and junior guard Jake Velky.  Thomas was also picked for the All-Defensive Team.  William Jewell also put three standouts on the two All-GLVC teams, including senior guard and first-teamer Patrick Whelan, as well as second-team honorees in redshirt junior guard Pharroh Gordon and junior guard Keith Hayes.

The league also recognized Truman State as its annual GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award team recipient, as well as 15 student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
