Cardinals Fall Just Short of Upset in GLVC Tournament

For the second time this season the William Jewell women's basketball team gave nationally ranked Southern Indiana all they could handle but fell just short in the fourth quarter, falling 64-54. The Cardinals end their season at 12-14 overall and 9-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1Q: Both teams started slowly with neither scoring until nearly three minutes into the contest. The Eagles took a quick 5-0 lead before the Cardinals came roaring back. A three from Rhyann Fisher gave Jewell a 13-9 advantage with just over three minutes to play in the opening period. USI responded and tied the game at 15 before Adriana Rodriguez went the length of the floor to score and make it a 17-15 Jewell lead after the first quarter.
  • 2Q: The Eagles went cold in the second frame allowing the Cards to jump out to a seven point lead, just 1:20 into the quarter. USI's Morgan Sherwood hit a three to take a 30-27 lead with 1:14 to play in the half but Kaiti Butaud matched it with a three at the other end to send the teams to the locker room knotted at 30.
  • 3Q: The third period was another cold one for both teams as the Cardinals and Eagles combined to score just 17 points. Katie Finn's fourth three of the day with just over a minute remaining in the quarter gave Jewell a 39-38 lead heading into the final ten minutes.
  • 4Q: Finn continued into the fourth quarter, scoring the first six points to put the Cardinals on top 45-38 just 61 seconds in. From there the Eagles took advantage of miscues by the Cards and went on an 18-0 run and took a 56-45 lead. Consecutive threes from Finn and Kayla Harrell cut the lead to six but Jewell could get no closer, falling 64-54.
