Tenth seeded Maryville University took advantage of a cold-shooting William Jewell Cardinal women's basketball team in garnering a 75-79 win in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament in Liberty, Mo., Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals never led in the game after hitting a three-pointer to start the scoring, shooting just 37% from the field, and going 7-27 from the three-point arch, including 1-14 in the second half. Â The Saints, meanwhile, shot 55% in the first half in mounting a double digit lead, and had two separate double-digit leads in the second half against Jewell. Â The Cardinals hung close with a 33-26 rebounding advantage and a 12-9 turnover advantage in the game.
Maryville hit 21-30 free throws in the game, and the Cardinals made 22-26.
Jewell, the seventh seed in the tournament, Â finishes the year 15-11. Â Maryville will play #2 seed Lewis on Friday in the GLVC quarterfinals in St. Charles, Mo., with a 14-13 mark.
