Cardinals Drop Five Set Thriller to Southwest Baptist

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team dropped a heart breaker on Friday evening to Southwest Baptist, 3-2, in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Cardinals fall to 1-12 on the season and 0-2 in the GLVC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The action was back-and-forth in the early going until SBU went on a 9-2 run to pull in front by eight, rolling to the 25-17 win.
  • The Cardinals used a run of their own in set two to take a 14-8 lead, after a kill from Macy Bartlett. SBU rallied to go back in front, 18-17, but Jewell finished on a 5-0 run, led by a Silvia Fisher kill, to win 25-21.
  • In set three, the Bearcats again took a seven point lead before Emily Brannan pulled Jewell back within four with a kill late but SBU wrapped up the frame, 25-17 to take the lead.
  • The Cardinals used three short runs to win set four and even the match. Trailing 15-14, Jewell closed on an 11-3 spurt, led by two kills from Emma Lea Benney to win 25-18 and force the fifth and deciding set.
  • After Jewell took the early 5-2 lead in the finale, the Bearcats went on a 9-1 run to open up a commanding lead. The Cardinals put together a rally, pulling within two but back-to-back service aces gave SBU the set, 15-10.
