LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team dropped a pair of games, 6-2 and 6-1 to Maryville University to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Jewell moves to 9-15 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Game 1: Maryville 6, Jewell 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After three scoreless innings, Maryville broke through first with an RBI single to right field but the Cardinals came right back with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth. With the base loaded, Emma Jane Ogle was hit by a pitch before Sheyenne Kelch's sac fly to right field plated Alexa Almejo to put Jewell on top, 2-1.
- The Saints turned around and tied the game in the following frame with a double to left center before retaking the lead on a home run in the sixth. They added three runs on four hits in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Amanda Chung had two doubles to account for two of Jewell's three hits.
- Reagan Bennett (2-7) suffered the loss, working 5.1 frames, allowing three earned runs while striking out three.
Game 2: Maryville 6, Jewell 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maryville got a single and a walk followed by a home run to straight away center to take a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two.
- The Saints added a run in the fourth but Jewell responded as Ogle walked to lead off the fifth and came around to score on a double off the bat of Bennett.
- Addison Koth blasted a two-run home run in the seventh to provide Maryville a five run cushion. The Cardinals put two on base in the bottom half but came up empty.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Chung again finished with two hits to lead the offense.
- Avrey Reynolds (3-4) took the loss, allowing three earned runs while Katie Heckman tossed 6.1 frames in relief, striking out four.
