ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - In a tale of two games, the William Jewell softball team was handed a 17-0 loss on Sunday afternoon before bouncing back and defeating Lewis University 14-2 in the second half of the doubleheader. The Cardinals move to 11-19 overall and 2-6 in conference play while Lewis goes to 12-10 and 3-1, and sees their eight game win streak come to an end.
Game 1: Lewis 17, Jewell 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Flyers wasted no time breaking things open, scoring seven runs in the opening inning, but an ill-timed Jewell error meant only four were earned.
- Lewis added one run in the second, five in the third, and four in the fourth to run away with the 17-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the reverse of the opener, the Cardinals came out swinging in the first frame of game two as Mikayla Chairez led off with a solo home run to get things started. With two in scoring position, Bennett hit a sac fly to center followed by a Tori Woodard RBI single to put Jewell on top by three after just five batters. Sheyenne Kelch put an exclamation point on the inning with a three-run home run, the first of her career, to make it 6-0.
- Jewell continued the offensive onslaught, adding two more in the second on RBI from Woodard and Emma Jane Ogle. Five hits in the third led to four more runs, expanding the lead to 12-0.
- Chairez blasted her second home run of the game in the fourth and was followed by Chung's solo shot to make it 14-0, in favor of the road team.
- Lewis got two hits and took advantage of a late Cardinal error to score two in the bottom of the fifth but could get no closer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals finished with 16 hits, including nine for extra bases, as Chairez and Chung both went 4-for-4 while Lopez and Woodard each had two hits.
- Bennett (4-6) earned the complete game win, allowing just one earned run on four hits.
