Greene Stadium
The Greene Stadium Stadium was home to William Jewell football, men's and women's soccer and track and field teams from 1955-2023. In June 2023, the seating and press box was demolished to make way for an updated amphitheater style stadium. After playing off campus last year, the Cardinals will return to their updated home for the 2024 season. Â
The stadium was built in 1955 and named in honor of Dr. Luther D. Greene who graduated from Jewell in 1891, who provided the major gift in funding the project, and was a member of the Cardinals first intercollegiate football team in 1888. The first squad consisted of 12 players and Dr. Greene served as manager as well as player.
In addition, Dr. Wallace W. Greene '28, a prominent surgeon in Kansas City, Mo., and an alumni achiever in 1954, gave a large contribution to the stadium. Dr. Wallace Greene, who grew up in Richmond, Mo., where he played high school football, was keenly interested in Jewell athletics and was very active in the athletic affairs of the College until his death in 1979. Upon Dr. Greene's death, his widow Edna, a former nurse and football fan, continued her interest in Jewell athletics and was the major contributor in the purchase of new stadium lights.Â
Greene Stadium was dedication on September 17, 1955 during an impressive ceremony that included the living captains of all former Cardinal teams since 1888. Jewell defeated Ottawa University 28-13 in the first game in the stadium. The Kansas City Chiefs also used the stadium for preseason training camp from 1962-1989.Â
The field is named for Dr. Norris Patterson, the winningest coach in Jewell history. From 1950-1967 he accumulated a record of 132-34-8 and won 13 conference championships.Â
In the summer of 2016, Norris Patterson Field received a face lift as new turf was installed. The traditional J-bird remains at center field while the 'Jewell Cardinals' was added in respective end zones.
