Men's Soccer Falls in Double-Overtime

Box Score
The William Jewell College men's soccer team took a 2-0 lead into the second half, but was unable to hold it, falling in double-overtime 3-2 to Drury University on Sunday in Springfield, Mo.  With the Great Lakes Valley Conference loss, the Cardinals drop to 11-5 overall and 9-5 in GLVC play.   The Cards have now lost three of their last four games after winning six straight.

Jewell got on the scoreboard first in the 5th minute when  Forrest McCurren put home a goal from 12 yards out off a pass from Ian Kennedy.  McCurren struck again at the 37:38 mark with an unassisted goal for season goal number 9.

As Drury entered the second half facing a 2-0 score, the Panthers struck quickly in the 46th minute when Matt Hutchison scored from eight yards out.  The assist was awarded to Jack Mathis and it marked the fifth goal of the season for Hutchison.

The Panthers continued their pressure in the 72nd minute when Brett Steere scored his sixth goal of the season from nine yards out to even the score at 2-2.

After the teams could not find the scoreboard for the remaining minutes, the teams headed for overtime.

In the final period, the teams looked to be settling for a draw until Hutchison struck again with a break -away game winning goal from five yards out in the 104th minute.

For the match, Drury fired 6 shots on goal, compared to Jewell's two.

The Cardinals return to GLVC play on Wednesday, Oct. 24 when they host Rockhurst University at Greene Stadium.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
