After defeating Lindenwood-Belleville on Friday the William Jewell College men's tennis team used late match dramatics to defeat former Heart of America Conference rival Lindenwood University on Saturday 5-4 to end the 2012 spring season.
The Cardinals got out to a quick start as
Shane Giannetti and
Bryan Thomas made quick work of Lindenwood at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-1. The Lions then tied things up at one match a piece as
Jimmy Hunter and
Chris Reimer were downed 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Bronson Brassel and
Max Cooper won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles to give the Cardinals a crucial 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
In singles, Giannetti put the Cards up 3-1 with his 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. Lindenwood then reeled off two straight wins as Thomas and Brassel fell at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively. First-year player
Eric Dailey put Jewell within reach of a match victory by pulling out a tough three set win at No. 5 singles 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Cooper lost a three set match at No. 4 singles leaving the match tied 4-4. Hunter, playing No. 6 singles, won the deciding match in a three set thriller by scores of 6-4, 3-6 and 6-4. The win marked the first time in over ten years the men have defeated Lindenwood.
The Cardinals end their 2012 season with a final mark of 13-7 and a 3-3 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference good for a fourth place finish in the western division.
