The William Jewell College men's tennis team started with a sweep of doubles then continued to press the Maryville University Saints in singles and rolled to a 9-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference win on Saturday. The Cardinals also honored Senior
Kyle Holt before the match as this marked the last home match for the men's team this season.
The Cardinals got off to a strong start as Jewell's number one doubles tandem of
Shane Giannetti and
Bryan Thomas defeated Maryville's top doubles team of Alexis de Villeneuve and Jesse Fortune 8-5.
At number two doubles,
Bronson Brassel and
Max Cooper amassed an 8-0 win over Jeremy Sellmeyer and Tony Boehmer while
Jimmy Hunter and
Chris Reimer posted an 8-1 win at number three doubles versus Patrick Kroener and Ryan Williams.
With a 3-0 lead in the overall match, Thomas gave the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number two over Fortune.
In number one singles, Giannetti posted a 6-1, 6-1win while Brassel bested Sellmeyer 6-2, 6-2 to clinch Jewell's first ever GLVC contest.
Cooper rolled to an 8-1 win against Boehmer in number four singles and
Eric Dailey defeated Kroener 8-1 at number five.
Jimmy Hunter blanked Ryan Williams 8-0 at number six singles to help the Cardinals earn the 9-0 shutout.
The Cardinals, 9-6 on the spring, will travel to Springfield, Ill., on Friday, April 13 to take on University of Illinois Springfield at 2:00 p.m.
