The William Jewell College women's soccer team faced one of ts toughest challenge of the season Sunday afternoon as they welcomed Quincy University to Greene Stadium.
Quincy came into the game with only one loss which was to Rockhurst on Friday and were ranked No. 7 in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll.
Two first-year players
Kenzie Kellogg,
Jade Gifford and the rest of the Cardinals answered the challenge though with a 2-1 upset-win, to hand Quincy its second loss of the season.
The Cardinals came out strong early on and battled, showing no signs of intimidation. The Cardinals outshot Quincy 7-3 in the first half and both teams went scoreless in the first half.
Jewell came out strong in the second half and had several good scoring chances, but they were not able to solve the tough Quincy defense early on in the second half.
In the 78th minute, Gifford put one past the Quincy goalkeeper to put the Cards on the board after a foul on the Lady Hawks.
Six minutes later,
Kate Beaver found Kellogg in the box who put it home to give the Cardinals a commanding 2-0 lead.
Quincy would not go away however, as Brittany Casey scored at the 85:59 mark to put Quincy down by one at 2-1.
Jewell would hang on for the win their sixth straight and fifth straight GLVC win.
The Cardinals, 9-1 (7-1 GLVC) will take on Southern Indiana on Friday, October 5 in Evansville, Ind., at 7:30 p.m.
