Chad Newman scored off a pass from
Justin Riley in the 88th minute to send the William Jewell College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Maryville University in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Sunday afternoon in Liberty, Mo.
With the win, the Cardinals move to 5-8 (3-7 GLVC) on the season, while Maryville is now 1-10(1-9 GLVC).
Jewell took the early lead when
Bryan Jones scored off a pass from
Drew Dempsey in the 37
th minute. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Maryville tied the game in the 60
th minute as Nick Doherty took a pass from Kory Clawson and shot it through Jewell keeper
Shane Van Hooser.
Newman gave the Cardinals the 2-1 advantage with just two minutes to play and the Cards were able to hold off the Saints for the win.
Maryville held an edge in shots (20-12), while the Cardinals led in corner kicks (5-4). Van Hooser finished with eight saves and Saints goalkeeper Josh Richter made three saves in the match.
The Cardinals will travel to Kenosha, Wisc., to take on University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m.
