The William Jewell College women's soccer team used two first half goals and held the Maryville Saints off late to come up with a 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory on Sunday.
Jewell, now 7-5-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the GLVC, got on the board first with 12:02 gone in the first half when senior
Sarah Franklin was able to put the ball in off a pass from
Leah Connery. Just over five minutes later, the Cardinals got a goal from sophomore
Jade Gifford off a pass from
Ashley Licata.
The Cardinals still led 2-0 when just under fifteen minutes to play in the game when Maryville's Amana Wiechens scored a goal for the Saints (0-11-1, 0-10-1 GLVC) to cut the lead in half.
Jewell was able to hold Maryville in check the rest of the way. Jewell keeper
Kelli Sontag notched four saves in the contest.
Maryville outshot the Cardinals 14-13 and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Jewell will travel to Kenosha, Wisc., to take on University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.
