The William Jewell College men's tennis team battled toe-to-toe with No. 38 Washburn University before falling 6-3 on Monday in Topeka, Kan. The Cardinals slip to 10-8, while Washburn improves to 11-6 on the year.
The match started out strong for the Cardinals as the No. 1 pairing of
Shane Giannetti and
Bryan Thomas knocked off The Ichabods No. 1 team 9-7. Washburn then picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles winning 9-7 and 8-2 respectively.
Giannetti evened the dual at 2-2 with his 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and Thomas gave the Cardinals a brief 3-2 lead with his 6-4, 1-6, 10-5 win at No. 2. Washburn would win the remaining four points to produce the 6-3 final.
Max Cooper grabbed a lead in his match but ultimately fell 6-7, 6-1, and 10-6.
The Cardinals will now face Southern Indiana in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at 11:00 a.m. (est) at North Central High School in Indianapolis, Ind.
