Women's Soccer Earns 5-2 Road Win

Seniors Sarah Franklin and Leah Conner posted two goals each as the William Jewell College women's soccer team opened the road portion of their 2013 season with a 5-2 win over Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, Mo.  

The win gives the Cardinals a 2-0 record to open the season, while the Griffons fall to 1-2.

Franklin started the scoring with a goal from Emily Monroe just over two minutes in from 10 yards out. 

The Griffons got on the board 9:10 into the first half with a ball blasted past keeper Kelli Sontag from the middle of the box. 

The Cardinals added three more goals to close out the first half with a 4-1 lead. Franklin scored her second goal of the contest at 18:26 on a shot from about 5 yards out and just inside the right corner courtesy of a pass from Olivia Dykes

Sophomore Jade Gifford then scored 10 minutes later when she drilled one home from nearly 40 yards away.   Leah Connery added Jewell's final goal of the half three minutes later off an assist from Franklin. 

In the second half, Tara Russell notched the Griffons lone score of the period off a shot from 20 yards out. 

The Cardinals added a final goal at the 75:51-mark by Connery off a misplay from the Griffon goalie. 

Jewell out-shot Western, 24-12 for the game, thanks to a 14-4 advantage in the second half. The Cardinals also took five corner kicks to the Griffons two.

Sontag earned her second win of the season, allowing two goals and making three saves.   Sophomore Alex Dressman mader her Cardinal debut in goal in the second half  and held the Griffons scoreless while recording two saves for Jewell. 

Jewell returns to action on Friday, Sept. 13, as they host Drury University at 12:00 p.m.
