The University of Illinois-Springfield had lost three straight coming into the match with Jewell men's soccer on Friday in Liberty, Missouri, but they came out firing against the Cardinals in the first half on their way to a 1-0 win in Great Lakes Valley Conference soccer.

The Prairie Stars (2-5, 1-4 GLVC) took several hard shots at Jewell goalkeeper Shane Van Hooser in the first period, and it was finally a hard-driven 25 yard shot from the left side on a one-on-one situation that beat the junior keeper as it grazed the post.  The goal in the 25th minute proved to be the difference.

Jewell had many opportunities for the equalizer in the second half, as they had eight corner kick opportunities, but could not get the goal they needed.

The Cardinals (3-5, 1-4) take on Southern Iniana at home on Sunday starting at 2:30 p.m.
