Jewell men's soccer squeezed out a 2-1 victory of Southern Indiana of the Great Lakes Valley Conference on Sunday, while the women's team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Srcreaming Eagles Sunday at Greene Stadium in Liberty.
The Cardinal men (4-5, 2-4 GLVC) took a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute after goals by Ethan Delany and
Jeremiah Smith, with assists to
Quentin Souder and
Zane Christenson respectively. Â That lead held until the 76th minute when USI scored an unassisted goal, but goalkeeper
Shane Van Hooser and the Cardinal defense was sharp again with, with Van Hooser saving six of the seven shots on goal by the Eagles (2-5-1).
In the women's game, Southern Indiana (5-2-1) scored an unassisted goal following a deflected shot to take a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play, and followed up with two goals in the second half to cruise to the win. Â Jewell (5-3-1, 3-2-1) was outshot 18-10 Â overall and 15-8 in shots on goal;
Ashley Licata and
Jade Gifford took five of the 8 shots on goal, with Sara Franklin held to just one shot on goal in the shutout.
Both teams are on the road next weekend to play at Quincy University Friday night and Truman State on Sunday afternoon.
