Box Score
Jewell men's soccer got their first win of the year, as they battled Newman University during a scorching hot day on the artificial turf inside Jewell's Greene Stadium.
The air temperature was 98 degrees, and the turf temperature was estimated at 120 degrees.
The 3-2 win did not start well for the Cardinals, as Newman scored a goal of a deflected clearing pass and drove in to score in the eighth minute. Â Jewell's Quentin Souder, though, tied it up 10 minutes later, and Trevor Pentola gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead win the 31st minute.
The lead did not last long into the second half, though, as Newman scored on a beautiful cross and diving header to tie the match in the 46th minute. Â
As the afternoon wore on, the wear started to show on both sides as they settled into a defensive battle. Â In the 72nd minute, however, Bryan Jones snaked his way past a defender on the wing and managed to get a shot to ricochet off a tangle of legs in front of the goal, and give the Cardinals the lead. Â Jewell was able to hold for the next 18 minutes to even their record at 1-1.
Great Lakes Valley Conference play begins on Friday night at home against nationally-ranked Drury University as part of a women's-men's doubleheader. Â The men's game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
