The William Jewell College women's basketball team hosted former Heart of America Conference rival Graceland University this evening at the Mabee Center. The Cardinals needed an extra five minutes to take home the 92-83 overtime win. Jewell improves to 3-2 on the season while Graceland falls to 2-6.
After trailing early in the half the Cards used an 11-2 run keyed by three straight three point baskets with 6:16 left in the half to reclaim the lead.
Jewell made five three point baskets in the first half and led 39-34 at halftime.
The Yellowjackets came out aggressively in the second half and took the lead on a three point play by Britney Atkin with 11:15 to play in the game.
Graceland built a six point lead in the half only to see Jewell cut the lead to one with 4:26 to play and Chris Keys put the Cards up one on a layup with 3:08 to play.
Graceland answered right back with a three pointer by Sydney Vaughn to take a brief two point lead.
Maddie Nelson's two free throws tied it up at 72-72 with 2:26 to play.
The Yellowjackets hit one of two free throws and led 73-72 with two minutes to play and after a lay up by Yvette Bennet up three with 1:45 to play.
Aerial Smith's driving layup put the Cards with one point at 75-74 with 1:25 to play. Graceland again was only able to hit one of two free throws and Nelson then tied it up with two free throws of her own with 40 seconds left to play.
The Cards held defensively and took over with 8 seconds to play and first-year player
Logan Antenen drove the lane and was fouled with 3.7 seconds left but missed both free throws to keep the game tied at 76-76.
Graceland then took over and their shot at the buzzer hit the front of the rim which sent the game into overtime.
Overtime belonged to the Cards as
Hayli Jo Smith put the Cards up by six with back to back three point baskets with 2:57 to play in overtime and Nelson put the game out of reach with a three of her own with 50 seconds left to play.
Nelson led four different Cardinals in double figures with 20 points. Smith pitched in 18 while Smith and Antenen each finished with 13 points.
The Cardinals will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday, December 4 at Rockhurst University. Tipoff is slated for 5:15 p.m.
