The William Jewell College men's tennis squad opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 7-0 setback at Rockhurst University on Wednesday afternoon at the Rockhurst Tennis Courts in Kansas City, Mo.
The loss drops the Cards to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference tilts. Rockhurst improves to 6-3 on the season and 1-0 in the GLVC.
The Hawks opened the match with a sweep of the doubles matches. In the No. 1 position, Truit Gray and Pawel Grzegrzolka  defeated Jewell's
Bryan Thomas and
Michael Rawat, 8-2. The Cards' No. 2 duo of
Jimmy Hunter and
Michael Wiskirchen were edged 9-8 by Luke Chmielewski and Decho Valev. The No. 3 match between Rockhurst's Daniel Chmielewski and Joey Fischer and Jewell's
Max Cooper and
Chris Reimer went the way of the Hawks by a final count of 8-1.
In singles action, Jewell played a couple of close first sets, but could not secure a victory as Rockhurst earned the sweep.
The Cardinals travel to Kirksville, Mo., on Saturday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. for their next contest, facing Truman State University in another GLVC tilt.
