Cardinals Open Wayne State Tournament with Loss to Northern State

The William Jewell women's basketball team fell to 1-3 on the season with a loss to Northern State University (S.D.) to open the Wayne State College Tournament Friday night in Wayne, Neb.

Following a Madison Campbell layup just 30 seconds in the game the Cardinals were held scoreless for over eight minutes. By the end of the first quarter Northern State had built a 16-4 lead.

Although the Wolves had built a 22-8 lead at the beginning of the second quarter, both teams went over five minutes without scoring before Northern State went on a 9-2 run to close the half with the Cardinals trailing 31-10.

In the opening half Jewell shot a dismal 15.6 percent from the floor, including 0-9 from behind the three-point line. The Wolves shot an impressive 48.7 percent from the floor and held a positive 12 rebounding lead.

Jewell continued to struggle offensively in the second half as the Wolves built a 44-12 lead before Jewell went on a 9-2 run, led by three consecutive three-point shots by Katie Finn and Meagan Paul, to bring the Cardinals within 46-21.

Northern State closed with a 23-16 run in the final quarter to get to the final margin of 69-37.

Although the Cardinals warmed a bit in the second half they shot as a team just 22.3 percent on the night. However, Jewell did manage to make all six three-point attempts in the second half.

Jewell was led offensively by Finn, Kelsey Nickerson, and Zinka Duric who all posted six points. Maddie Nelson led with five rebounds while Paul grabbed four assists.

The Cardinals return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on the host team Wayne State College at 4:00 p.m.
