Volleyball Falls in Season Finale at Quincy

The William Jewell volleyball team dropped the 2015 season finale at Quincy University Saturday 3-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 25-14. The Cardinals finish the season 8-23 overall, 2-16 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The eight wins this season is a five game improvement from a year ago.

In both the first two sets the Cardinals spotted Quincy a six point lead out of the gate, forcing second-year head coach Carolyn Raynes to call a timeout and refocus her team. In set one Jewell battled back to within five at 14-9 behind three consecutive kills from Kaylee Marquardt along with an Olivia Tolberd ace. However, behind a .314 attack percentage in the opening frame Quincy pulled away for the 25-17 win.

The second set saw Jewell total just eight kills while committing 11 errors, allowing Quincy to grab the 25-14 win.

The final set saw Jewell competed with the Hawks early, with the score knotted at seven before three Cardinal errors allowed Quincy to grab a lead they did not relinquish. The Hawks pulled away for the 25-14 win and the three set match victory.

In her final game in a Jewell uniform, senior Kaylee Marquardt led the Cardinals with eight kills, followed by fellow senior Kelsey Wagner and freshman setter Stefanie Richterkessing, each with four. Richterkessing also put up 22 assists.

Defensively, sophomore Codi Winslow led Jewell with ten digs while Richterkessing and Tolberd each grabbed nine.

The future of Jewell volleyball is bright as the Cardinals will graduate just two seniors in Marquardt and Wagner, and return ten players who saw major court time this fall, including six freshman.
