The William Jewell women's basketball team fell 80-70 at Central Missouri, who is receiving votes in the national polls, Wednesday evening in Warrensburg, Mo. The loss drops Jewell to 1-5 overall.
The Cardinals came out strong in the first half shooting nearly 46 percent (10-22) from the floor including 45 percent from behind the three point line (4-9). However, the Jennies were equally as good connecting on 49 percent of their shots and outrebounding the Cardinals 23-10.
Central Missouri opened the game on an 8-3 run before senior guard
Logan Antenen scored five of the next seven Cardinals points to tie the game at ten. The Jennies closed the first period out on another run to push the lead to eight at 23-15.
In the second quarter things seemed to get out of hand for the Cardinals as Central Missouri opened up a 17 point advantage with 4:51 remaining in the opening half. A three-point shot from
Lindsey McCoy would end the 11-2 run by the Jennies as Jewell began to crawl back in to the game and cut the lead to ten with under two mintues to go in the period.
McCoy was instrumental in the first half, scoring all seven of her points in the second period to help keep the Cardinals within striking distance.
The Cardinals came out hot in the second half scoring the first six pointing and cutting the the once 17 point lead, to just seven at 45-38at the 6:51 mark of the third period.
The teams traded points over the next five minutes until the Jennies seemed to once again take control going up 16 with just over a minute to play in the third quarter. The Cardinals weren't done yet as they cut the lead to ten as
Zinka Duric and
Meagan Paul each connected on a three-point shot with under 50 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Jewell knocked on the door of the upset throughout the fourth period but each time the Cardinals scored Central Missouri countered with points of their own. Two free-throws from
Maddie Nelson with 3:55 remaining in the game cut the lead to eight but that is as close as the Cardinals would get as they were outscored 6-4 over the final three minutes.
Even with the loss Jewell enjoyed their best offensive outing thus far in 2015 as they shot 50 percent from the floor, 41 percent from behind the arc, and connected on 13 of 16 free throws. The Cardinals were outrebounded 44-25 but did force 15 turnovers and held Central Missouri to just 7-26 from the three point line.
Freshman
Madison Campbell quietly led the Cardinals with 13 points, including nine in the second half, to go along with seven rebounds. Duric and Nelson each chipped in ten to give Jewell three players in double-figures.
The Jennies were led by Shelby Winklemann's game-high 24 points and Ashley Jones' double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Up next, Jewell will open up the home portion of the 2015-16 schedule as they host Upper Iowa (0-3) on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
