Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | JaeLynn Ellison, Assistant Sports Information Director

Cardinals Top Evangel, Win Third Straight

For the second consecutive day, head women's basketball coach Jill Slominski was able to get all 17 players on her roster into a game, with 16 recording at least two points, as the Cardinals topped Evangel University 81-47 to wrap up the Missouri Western Classic. The win moves Jewell to 4-5 on the season, while Evangel drops to 2-7.

For the first time this season the Cardinals held the lead for all 40 minutes of the contest with the Crusaders as they jumped out to an 18-6 advantage and never looked back.

Although Saturday's game wasn't quite the dominating offensive performance from a day before, the Cardinal defense was just as stifling, as they held the Crusaders to a first half shooting percentage of just 13 percent. Despite the early lead, the game was still competitve with 7:00 minutes remaining in the second quarter at 25-13 before Jewell went on a 16-6 run to close half at 41-19. In the midst of that run was a 12-0 spurt by the Cardinals led by four points and two blocked shots from Madison Campbell in a span of just over one minute.

Much like the first quarter, the teams came out even at the start of the third period before Jewell exploded for another 17-3 run to finish the period with a 65-29 advantage on the backs of Zinka Duric, Lindsey McCoy, and Blair Klostermann.

While playing mainly reserves over the final ten minutes, Jewell maintained the large lead to pull away for the final margin of 81-47, for the Cardinal's third win in a row. Despite not shooting overly impressive in the opening half, Jewell came out strong in the second frame, hitting nearly 50 percent of their shots to give the Cardinals an overall shooting percentage of 43 for the game. Evangel was held to just 23 percent, but managed to hit 77 percent of their shots from the free throw line, well above their season average of 57.

For the third consecutive night Jewell outrebounded their opponent 51-42, and grabbed 18 offensive boards, led by Chris Keys who pulled down five. Jewell forced the Crusaders into 26 turnovers which the they turned into 33 points. Strong performances from reserve players also continues to be a strong point for the Cardinals and coach Slominski as her team outscored Evangel 38-15 from the bench.

Junior guard Maddie Nelson continued her torrid start to the year as she led the Cardinals with 12 points, to go along with six rebounds, five steals, and tied her career high of eight assists. Klostermann followed with 11 points and seven rebounds, with Campbell adding ten and five respectively, along with two blocks. In total, Jewell enjoyed a season-high ten blocked shots led by sophomore Katie Cordray's four in just six minutes of play.

The Crusaders were led by Allison Swanson's 13 points and eight rebounds.

Up next for the Cardinals is a trip Quincy and a matchup with the Hawks (RV) to open up Great Lakes Valley Conference play on December 3, at 5:30 p.m. in Quincy, Ill. Unlike a typical GLVC weekend, Jewell will then return home the following Saturday to host Truman State at 2:00 in the Mabee Center.
