The William Jewell College men's tennis team went 2-2 in their matches of 2015 over the weekend. Jewell dropped a 8-1 decisions to Nebraska-Kearney and St. Cloud State on Friday and gained a 9-0 win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday. The Cardinals added a 5-4 triumph over former Heart of America Conference foe Baker University on Saturday as well.
In the Friday matches sophomore
Amery Clews was the lone bright spot for Jewell as he earned both wins at the No. 2 singles spot.
On Saturday, Jewell dominated Nebraska Wesleyan sweeping all three doubles matches and all six singles matches. First-year players
Brian Wohlers and
Marco Antonio Martinez Lopez earned their first collegiate victories for Jewell in the win.
In the Baker match, the Cards trailed 1-2 after doubles with Marc Gärtner and
Isaac Hamilton winning 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
Gärtner pulled the Cards even with a win at No. 1 singles and Clews put the Cards up 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles. Junior
Dean Pinhas pulled out a clutch 6-4, 2-6, 12-10 victory at No. 4 singles before Baker tied the match at 4-4 with wins over
Jimmy Hunter and
AJ Naanep at No. 3 and No. 6 singles respectively. Hamilton then clinched the match for the Cardianals with his 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.
The Cardinals, 2-2 overall will host University of Illinois-Springfield on Sunday, March 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Clayview Country Club.
