Volleyball Sweeps Final Day of South Central Classic

On the final day of the South Central Classic the William Jewell volleyball team swept their two games to move to 4-4 overall. The wins also mean that in the first two weeks of the season the Cardinals have surpassed the win total from all of 2014.

In game one Jewell took on Southern Arkansas who they had previously defeated one week ago. On Saturday Jewell downed the Muleriders 25-19, 23-25, 26-24, 25-19. Three players finished with double-digit kills led by freshman Raechel Meisinger's game-high 18, followed by Grace Miller and Kelsey Wagner, each with 11.

Four players also totaled double-digit digs with senior Kaylee Marquardt leading the way with 17, followed closely by Wagner and Olivia Tolberd with 15, and Alix Weigel with 11. Weigel also posted a game-high 41 assists with Tolberd grabbing five serving aces.

In the night cap Jewell took on the host East Central University and downed the Tigers 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-15.

After going back and forth in set three and falling narrowly the Cardinals came back and dominated set four to take the victory.

Wagner posted a game-high 17 kills while committing no errors with Meisinger also grabbing 15 kills. Tolberd had a game-high 20 digs while Weigel and Marquardt were also in double-digits with 12 and 11 respectively.

On the weekend Jewell went 3-1 including sweeping the three opponents from the Great American Conference.

Tolberd posted an astounding 16 aces over the four matches. Meisinger led the Cardinals with 59 kills followed by Wagner's 45. Sophomores Grace Miller and Madeline Johnson each had strong weekends in the middle with Miller totaling 36 kills and 23 total blocks while Johnson posted 26 and nine respectively.

Up next for the Cardinals is the final tune-up prior to the start of Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Tuesday against Emporia State University. This match will also be the home opener beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Mabee Center on the William Jewell campus.
