Late Goal Earns Cardinals Draw

The William Jewell men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw with Southern Indiana in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Sunday. The tie moves the Cardinals to 2-5-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the GLVC.

Southern Indiana jumped out to an early lead as Braiden Acton scored at the 10:20 mark of the opening period.

Junior Ethan Delaney tied the game at one on his fifth goal of the season in the 22nd minute. The Screaming Eagles would jump back in front on a goal from Brian Fischer and go into the break with a 2-1 lead.

The two teams traded shots for majority of the second half until a corner kick from Justin Riley allowed Jordan Lindsey to put a goal in for the Cardinals to tie the game 2-2 with less than five minutes remaining.

With under ten seconds to play in the first overtime period USI had an open shot in the box but the ball was mishandled to preserve the even score for the Cardinals.

In the final period of the match the Screaming Eagles again had an opportunity but an outstanding save from senior goalie Joe Keeven kept the score even once again.

The Cardinals managed nine shots in the overtime period with five being on goal.

Overall Jewell totaled 16 shots, ten on goal, while holding USI to just seven shots on goal.

Lindsey grabbed a game-high five shots, while Quinton Conyers, Ethan Delaney, and Jordan Evans each had two. Five other Cardinals had one shot with Kit Russell grabbing an assist.

Keeven moves to 2-5-2 overall after totaling five saves, including three in the overtime periods.

Up next for the Cardinals is a road trip to Quincy University on Friday, October 2 followed by Truman State on Sunday, October 4.
